The Postal Service places a high priority on personal privacy and cybersecurity.

Public access to postal mobile telephone numbers and postal email addresses may lead to phishing schemes and phone calls from the public after hours.

When responding to a Freedom of Information Act request, postal mobile telephone numbers and postal email addresses may both be redacted by citing Exemption 3 with 39 U.S.C. § 410(c)(2) and Exemption 6.

Safeguarding USPS email addresses and mobile telephone numbers protects both our network and our employees’ privacy.

And that’s smart business.

What’s a “record?”

The Freedom of Information Act defines “record” as any information in an “agency record” that’s maintained by the agency in any format.

The Postal Service defines a “record” as “a discrete, distinct or segregable grouping of information that pertains to a specific topic” that’s recorded and is in the custody or control of USPS. This includes all electronic data.

“Personal records” — such as notes taken to refresh an employee’s memory and not integrated into agency files – are not considered “records” under the FOIA.

Keeping the definition of a “record” in mind while searching for documents that are responsive to a FOIA request ensures that the Postal Service will comply with all its obligations under the act.

And that’s smart business.

A job safety analysis (JSA) is used to reduce accidents and injuries by specific tasks. To create one, identify a specific task, break down the task into steps, list the hazards or potential accidents for each step, and recommend the safest way to perform each step.

Using JSAs can reduce accidents and injuries by increasing job knowledge during new employee training and when there are new processes or equipment.

Heat stress

Too hot!

When the heat’s on, chances of experiencing heat stress increase. Know the different types of heat stress and how they can make you ill.

Heat stroke occurs when the body is unable to regulate its temperature or cool down.
Heat exhaustion is severe dehydration due to the loss of water through sweating.
Heat syncope is fainting due to dehydration or inability to adapt to hot environments.
Heat cramps are caused when the body sweats excessively and depletes muscles of proper nutrients.
Heat rash is a skin irritation caused by excessive sweating.

Through training and awareness of heat stress, heat-related injuries or illnesses can be reduced.
