Vehicle safety

Cars can catch fire for many reasons. It could be a mechanical or electrical issue. It could be a car crash. If you see smoke or flames or smell burning rubber or plastic, respond immediately.

• Pull over as quickly as it’s safe to do so to a safe location off the road.
• Once you’ve stopped, turn off the engine.
• Get everyone out of the car and don’t return to the burning car for any reason.
• Move everyone at least 100 feet from the burning car and well away from traffic.
• Call 9-1-1.

You can help prevent car fires. Have your car serviced regularly and checked for cracked or loose wiring and fuel or oil leaks. Transport small amounts of gasoline in a certified gas can that’s sealed. Keep a window open for ventilation and never transport gas in the passenger compartment. Never park a car where flammables, such as grass, are touching the catalytic converter. Drive safely to avoid being in an accident.

Taking these precautions now may prevent damage to your vehicle later.

Preventive care

Preventive care is important. All adults should have regular physical exams so a doctor can catch any health problems in the earliest stages. Early diagnosis and treatment result in the best long-term outcome. Get regular eye care for vision problems and to check for glaucoma and other eye diseases.

Most dentists recommend a cleaning and checkup every six months — and brush your teeth at least twice a day and floss once a day. If you work around loud noise, have your hearing tested at least once a year.  Preventive care can help prevent illness, reduce medical bills and help you to live a longer life.
