Keep Good Spending Records

You’re responsible for proper use of your SmartPay2 purchase card. Electronically reconcile and dispute any improper charges. Follow local buying policies and procedures.
Maintain accurate and complete records of all purchase card transactions for three years.
Supporting documentation must provide a clear audit trail to ensure proper use of postal funds and to resolve any disputed charges.

And that’s smart business.

Proceed with Caution

When it comes to gifts between employees, proceed with caution.
Generally, an employee should not give a gift to a manager or higher-paid colleague. Likewise, a gift should not be accepted from a subordinate or lower-paid employee.
There are exceptions. A non-cash gift worth $10 or less to a manager, occasionally, such as on birthdays or holidays, is OK.
Another exception is a cash gift to a manager on a special occasion, such as a marriage, birth, adoption, retirement, or resignation.

It’s all about avoiding complaints of favoritism or harassment, and creating a cohesive, productive workforce.

And that’s smart business.

Fire extinguishers

Use the right one at the right time.

Fire extinguishers are labeled according to type of fire they’re designed to put out.

Class A fires consist of ordinary combustibles, such as wood, paper or cloth, and can be put out with water.
Class B fires consist of flammable liquids. Dry-chemical extinguishers are usually used.
Class C fires involve energized electrical equipment. Water can’t be used because it conducts electricity and can deliver a shock. Carbon dioxide and dry-chemical extinguishers are best.
Class D fires involve combustible metals. Special dry-compound powders are used.

Using the wrong type of extinguisher, or using one improperly, could cause additional injuries and property damage. Know the difference.

And that’s smart safety.

Take a spin around it first.

Every time you use a postal vehicle make a safety check. Follow the steps outlined in Notice 76, Expanded Vehicle Safety Check. Tell your supervisor about defects, unsafe conditions or damage. Request immediate repairs if there’s low brake pedal pressure or a faulty emergency brake, broken lights or turn signals, defective wipers or defroster, or tire wear.

Doing the safety check before you drive puts you in control of your own safety — and the safety of others.

And that’s smart safety!
