Appointments to Partisan Political Office

• The Hatch Act prohibits a Postal Service employee from running as a candidate in a partisan election. However, it doesn’t prohibit you from being appointed to a partisan political office. For example, if you’re appointed deputy town clerk as a Republican or a city commissioner as a Democrat, that’s OK.
• Remember: You can’t engage in political activity while on duty, in a postal or government building, in uniform, or in a postal vehicle.

Serving your community through political activity outside of your postal employment preserves the public’s trust in the Postal Service and doesn’t violate the Hatch Act.

And that’s smart business.
